This workshop will be delivered by Jon Garside and Raymond Li. If you are an AMI or MTA member you will be able to apply for CPD.
Overview:
Session 1
Thousands of people have their first climbing experience in walls every year, learning good belaying behaviours from the outset is crucially important. The first half of this workshop will consider teaching belaying to develop and instil good belayer behaviours.
Poor belaying is sadly not uncommon and can result in serious injury.
Session 2
Covering my experience working as a DM in the Westway, (typical climber and staff member and customer interaction)
How we deal with interventions when poor practice/behaviours are witness and need to be addressed and how its evolved over the years of me working in a wall.
How we managed to address skill/knowledge fade with a senior group of climbers at the Westway.

Jon Garside
Jon has been the Training Officer for the BMC and Mountain Training England (MTE) since 2004. A Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor and International Mountain Leader, Jon formerly worked at Plas y Brenin for seven years delivering a variety of Mountain Training courses.
Jon is part of Mountain Training’s quality assurance team, visiting courses and overseeing update workshops for MTE providers delivering schemes such as the Indoor Climbing Assistant, Climbing Wall Instructor and Climbing Wall Development Instructor. Jon wrote the candidate handbooks for two of those schemes’ predecessors, the Climbing Wall Award and Climbing Wall Leader Award and was involved in the development and launch of Mountain Training’s Coaching Scheme, including writing a Sport England funding bid to kickstart that scheme.
Jon’s BMC work includes overseeing and developing the coach education workshops since 2005: FUNdamentals of Climbing, Physical Training, Coaching Children and Route Setting. Jon was the lead BMC Officer for the BMC’s Talent Development work for ten years from its inception in 2008. This included the creation of the Development Squad in 2016 and writing a Sport England funding bid that secured a step change in funding in 2018.
Most recently, Jon has been one of the BMC’s staff working closely with the ABC, NICAS, Mountain Training, Mountaineering Scotland and Mountaineering Ireland on a variety of projects to promote good practice in climbing, whether indoors or outdoors.
